Internet Scams To Be Aware Of
You may want your senior to know how to use a cell phone, laptop, or desktop, and for a good reason. This is the best way for your loved one to age in place with the help of senior home care services but also be able to keep in touch with friends and family. Technology also allows seniors to communicate with their doctors without going into the office and connecting with friends worldwide. However, the drawback of teaching your loved one about tech is that they risk being a victim of an internet scam. So, when you get your loved one a new piece of technology ensures they know what scams to look for or help them look for signs to be aware of. Again, this is something that senior home care may also be able to help with.
Here are things to look for.
Cure to a Health Problem
If your senior is scrolling around on the internet, they may encounter a scam that says it will cure their health problems. Teach your loved one that if they see an ad for a miracle cure to one of their problems, they should never click on it. Sometimes algorithms pick up on what a senior is searching for, and scammers can access this information and target your senior through social media, emails, or websites they visit often. Again, teach them to never click on them, or they may get a virus or enter information that gives scammers access to bank accounts.
Free Gifts
Most of you would click on something that offers a gift, but the truth is it’s never free. Sometimes these ads pop up to collect information on a person. It can lead to the loss of major money, a stolen identity, or a virus on the computer that will destroy the whole thing. It’s important to teach your seniors not to click even if the ads look attractive or they are offering gifts your senior wants. If a price looks too good to be true, it usually is not true. Ensure your senior knows what sites are safe to buy from. Keep in mind that although senior home care is around, often, they cannot watch everything a senior does, so it is essential for your seniors to know the signs to look for a potential scam.
Tech Support Scam
When you get your loved one a new piece of technology, they will need to know how to use it and avoid scams. However, they may still have questions on how to work things, and there are tons of tech support scams out there. If your senior Googles a question, they may accidentally fall onto a fake tech support website. These websites will gather information about your seniors and steal their money or gather information from their computers for other uses. It is dangerous and should be avoided.
Malware Scams
These will pop up as ways to “protect” your senior’s computer, but when they download it, this will put a virus on their computer. It will steal information and put your seniors at risk of getting their identity stolen and ruining their laptops.
