What’s my story? How did I get started in home health care?
Whether it is a new client, maybe an assisted living facility, or a partnered agency that we meet with for the very first time; I get asked those questions each time. So, let me give you a little background on my story and hopefully answer these questions and perhaps more that you may have.
The wheels were all put into motion back in 2010.
You see that was the year that I decided that I wanted to go back to school and get my bachelor’s degree. I elected to take classes with Davenport University and with the growing need in the medical field, well that became my calling. Health Systems Administration (HSA) was right up my alley and that is the direction I decided to partake. With a Bachelor’s in Science in HSA, I would gain knowledge in overall managerial aspects of various health care settings and organizations. Those that I now call on seven years later.
But really my undergraduate course of study is just part of the overall picture on why I chose to get into home health care. You see that same year, actually, about 4 months after I initially started at Davenport I started down another path with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Ann Arbor. In a way, that path has become a full circle in my career field for me and one that I will cherish in my thoughts and memories as I move forward. Working with our veterans in Ann Arbor was amazing. It was not only working with them but with all of the great people behind the scenes that care for our veterans daily that had the most impact on my life.
I was lucky to have had a chance to serve again with various hats in Ann Arbor.
I say serve again because I previously served our nation in the U.S. Army for 9 years, 2 months, and 26 days (but who counted right?) I was an administrative specialist in the Army and that followed me through life in everything I have done which is a huge benefit. With the VA in Ann Arbor, I was fortunate enough to have had a chance to serve in Patient Care Administration, Payroll, Facilities Maintenance and Environmental Services, and lastly as the Fleet Manager.
When I finished up my HSA degree I knew there was something missing. While my overall picture was taking shape, I had to figure out the next step…
That next step lead back to school and getting my Executive Masters in Business Administration degree also with Davenport. It was the end of the first year and our cohort was taking Critical Thinking with Dr. Hauck that the lightbulb came on. What would be the feasibility of opening up a home health care agency in the Livonia, Novi, Northville, Plymouth, and Farmington Hills area? There it was, somewhere down deep I had my answer. I just didn’t know it quite yet. We all graduated a year later and I continued to work with the VA in Ann Arbor with my diploma staring at me each day in my office. Two years later, more research, blessings from the family lead me to make the decision that it was time to take that leap of faith.
You see, the decision to open up a home health care agency has taken quite a long time over many years. It was not a light decision on my part or our families part. Having the answers to the questions asked has made it an easier decision as my transition occurred.
In January of this year, we officially began: “No Place Like Home Health, LLC (NPLHH). “
NPLHH is a private duty non-skilled agency with a mission to provide quality home health care that is sensitive and responsive to our patients and their family’s needs. We strive to put our patient’s in control of their home care services and to maximize each patient’s potential for a full life. We have taken it a step further to continue to serve our veterans by employing a veteran-centered care approach to what we do. But remember, we are here to help anyone that needs our help.
